like imagine if you’d never seen a dog and you saw a saint bernard and you were like, what’s that and then someone was like, thats a dog. and then you saw a chihuahua and you were like ok whats that and they were like, that’s a dog. wouldn’t you feel lied to? wouldn’t you sense that something was amiss
One of the Most Disgusting Things I Have Ever Seen on Network Television
Okay. So sometimes on weekends I have an odd hour of TV between FRIENDS and 30 Rock. Usually I can find something to fill the time, but tonight I couldn’t so I resigned to having George Lopez on in the background. Less than half-way through the episode I am ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED by what I am seeing/hearing. Please understand that I have exactly ZERO knowledge of this show outside the 25 minutes I have just - unfortunately - watched.
Here is the premise of the episode: Lopez and wife are part of a neighborhood watch program and they see that a sex-offender has just moved in the neighborhood. They get riled up and decide to go to the guys house to warn him to stay away from their kids. Well, joke is on them (apparently?) because it turns out the sex offender is a woman. She is a former teacher who had sex with her 15-year-old male student. Thank goodness, right?! Everyone is relieved. Granted, they do not confirm whether or not the sex was consensual, but when responding to the question of “is she hot?” Lopez tells his son, “I don’t think her last victim suffered.”
Minutes later in the episode, the son tells Lopez not to worry because even “Laura Ortiz wouldn’t kiss me and the bottle pointed right at me! She spun it, she HAS to kiss me that’s the rule!” Lopez responds with, “Laura Ortiz is a little girl who doesn’t know what she’s doing.” This is when I had to stop watching.
I have two MAJOR problems with this episode.
Okay. Problem 1: Jokes about rape are funny is the offender is an attractive woman. In fact, is it even REALLY rape? I mean, the kid MUST have wanted it, right? He’s a teenage boy and all teenage boys want to have sex with there adult female teachers, right? No. Like I said, they never actually say whether or not it was consensual, but it is easily assumed as consensual by everyone in the neighborhood. There are multiple comments (with the added laugh track, of course) about how “it’s not the same thing” as it would be if it were an older man and a younger girl.
Problem 2: Laura Ortiz is obviously a prude bitch. I mean, the bottle LANDED on that kid so she HAS to kiss him, right? And because she doesn’t, she must be a “little girl who doesn’t know what she’s doing,” right? Or… and this is just a guess… perhaps she doesn’t find said boy ATTRACTIVE and/or APPEALING. Maybe she’s a lesbian. Or maybe she has NO REAL REASON but - get this - DOESN’T WANT TO KISS HIM ANYWAY. She doesn’t need a reason and she doesn’t OWE anyone anything.
The episode ends with Lopez realizing his mistake in thinking that it was okay because the offender was a woman. Here are a few of his other mistakes that he does NOT realize by the end of the episode:
1. Not all teenage boys want to have sex with their female teachers.
2. Girls who do not want to kiss or partake in other sexual activities are completely in their right to deny participation in said activities. This does not make them “little girls.” This does not mean that they “don’t know what they want.” Telling this - or even joking about it with - a young boy sends the message that girls do not really know what they want and it is okay to “show them” or “correct them.”
3. Boys and men can and are taken advantage of sexually. They did not want it just because of their Y chromosomes.
